First International Conference Green Health Care Maracaibo, Venezuela 2 juli - 4 juli, 2001

(Primer Seminario Internacional Hospitales Verdes)


During three conference days 46 organisations where represented. Hospitals and companies from Venezuela, Colombia, United States, Spain and the Netherlands attained the conference. 20 speakers gave introductions, alternated by question times and round tables for conclusions, recommendations and action planning.

Suppliers where stimulated by the hospital to take PVC and phthalate free products in their assortment.

The contribution of the private hospital Pablo Tobón Uribe from Medillín, Colombia, was very motivating for the Venezuelan colleagues. Also the contribution of the Ministry of Environment from Colombia was stimulating for the colleagues from the Venezuelan Ministries of Environment and Health.

On local, regional and national level the need is experienced for a better management of chemicals and dangerous waste. Together with the regional and national ministries of Environment and Health, plans were made for regional and national expansion of the project.

Definite plans were made for:
- a better local and regional cooperation;
- the separation of hospital waste and other waste;
- special storage and transport routes of hospital waste;
- separated dumping of hospital waste.
